Highlights
My career
Initially, I began my academic career on the path to being a physician. In my 2nd year of Pre-med, I came to the realization that the idea of losing a patient was not something I wanted. My nature is highly analytical, and I love a challenge (as a teen, I frequently took our family P.C. apart and put it back together with upgrades), so medicine was a great challenge for me; you have to figure out what is wrong with someone then try and cure them. While I chose to leave medicine, Human Resources allowed me to be still highly analytical and strategic.
While in my undergrad program at the University of New Hampshire, I worked at the local hospital, which led to a transition into medical billing. From there, I worked in bookkeeping for a small business, which became my first taste of Human Resources.
I found my niche and pursued education, which led me through two bachelor’s degrees, to an MBA in H.R. Management and, eventually, an M.S. in Information Technology. While continuing my education, I began my H.R. career at a biotechnology organization that created filters for blood products, among other items. Working at Whatman allowed me to work for an international organization. I got my first experience working with colleagues in China and Germany on an employee relations program I had created for our U.S.-based facility. From there, I moved to the D.C. area. I worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, a large federal contractor in their security and defense divisions. This began my career in federal contracting, and through the years, I have worked for a few other federal contractors and run my own consultancy firms.
My career in HR started with a combination of on-the-job learning and formal education. I gradually worked my way up, gaining experience in various HR roles and industries. My dedication and expertise were recognized by other organizations, who approached me with job offers, even when I hadn’t applied to them initially. This recognition and the opportunities it brought further fueled my passion for HR and my commitment to continuous learning and growth.
Twenty-four years later, I have been the Vice President of Human Resources for several years and managed several teams of H.R. professionals. I’ve since expanded my reach to begin an HR consulting firm, a blog, and authored some books.
